Abstract

Introduction: The use of psychotropic drugs has become increasingly common among university students, particularly in health-related fields, as a response to high levels of anxiety, depression, and academic stress. The medicalization of emotional difficulties and the easy access to such medications raise concerns regarding inappropriate use and the lack of professional monitoring. Objective: To describe the factors associated with the use of psychotropic drugs among undergraduate pharmacy students, considering sociodemographic characteristics, health history, emotional symptoms, and academic routine. Material and Methods: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive, and analytical study conducted with pharmacy students. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire addressing sociodemographic, health, and academic information, along with validated scales for anxiety (BAI) and depression (PHQ-9). Results: Among participants, 32% reported using psychotropic medications, mainly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and benzodiazepine anxiolytics. The primary reason reported was the treatment of anxiety, either alone or associated with depression and insomnia. Users showed significantly higher levels of anxiety and depression compared to non-users. No statistically significant associations were observed with sociodemographic or academic variables. Conclusions: The findings suggest that emotional factors and psychological distress are strongly associated with psychotropic drug use among pharmacy students. The results highlight the need for strategies aimed at promoting mental health and rational medication use in university settings, as well as encouraging further research on the topic.
