Abstract

This study examines occupational exposure to carcinogenic agents in Brazil between 2020 and 2024, based on notifications recorded in the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN). A total of 3,635 work-related cancers were documented, predominantly non-melanoma skin cancer, followed by lung and breast cancer. The findings reveal pronounced regional inequalities, with concentration of cases in the Southeast and probable underreporting in the North and Northeast. Men, informal workers, self-employed individuals, and retirees were the most affected groups. Agriculture, construction, and road transportation were the sectors most strongly associated with exposure to carcinogens such as UV radiation, silica, asbestos, diesel exhaust, and organic solvents. Guided by the biopsychosocial-spiritual model of Primary Health Care (PHC), the study discusses the social, cultural and structural determinants influencing occupational illness, emphasizing the need to strengthen occupational health surveillance, integrate information systems, enhance regulatory enforcement, and promote intersectoral preventive policies. The results indicate that occupational cancer in Brazil remains underestimated and unevenly distributed, demanding continuous, coordinated and person-centered actions to ensure equity, protection and dignity for the working population.
